Sharpen your eye and develop your skills in the most  basic and traditional drawing regimen, drawing the male and female nude model. All skill levels welcome.  Artists must bring supplies, including easels. Open to artists 18+. Younger artists may take this class with written permission from parent/guardian. Fee:   We request payment for 3 sessions at a time. You don't have to use the pre-paid sessions consecutively; you may use them at anytime. DCA Members and Students 3 classes, $30 ($10 per class!)  Non Members 3 classes, $45 ($15 per class)

 

"Sunday In the Park" Plein Air Painters Group

Sunday, 9/7  &  9/21,10/5  &  10/19

9:00am to noon

Program Facilitator: Alice Smallwood

The group normally meets and paints from 9 am-Noon, two Sundays a month, May-October, at pre-selected painting sites in the Detroit-Downriver area. Locations are generally within a 30 minute drive of the DCA. Former painting sites include: Heritage Park (Taylor), Lake Erie and Oakwood MetroParks, a 19th century operating mill (New Boston) and the park on the Huron River in Flat Rock. Sometimes we meet for breakfast before going to the painting site.

YOGA

The Art of Yoga                                                                                             

NEW DAY! Thursday, 8:30-9:30 am, September-November 

Instructor: Cheryl Rudd, Certified Yoga Teacher 

Start your Thursday  morning with yoga while being surrounded by artwork in the Home Gallery. Bring a mat and wear comfortable clothes. $20 for 4 sessions; drop-in welcomed.  Level: beginners.

Art & Politics                                                                                                  Wednesday, October 29, 7:00 pm                                                                Speaker: Pauline Mengebier

With Election Day right around the corner, discover how the rules of governance have been a part of our lives since ancient times. This lecture, presented by a speaker from the DIA Speaker’s Bureau,  will take a look at how art can reflect the politics of the nations and peoples of the world from ancient times through the present.  Participants will have an opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite artist and receive a free campaign button.  Best of all, NO hanging chads!

WORDS and MUSIC PROGRAMS

NEW !The Parlor Series                                                                    

Thursdays, Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, Dec. 11 7:00 pm                                         Hosted by Sharlet and Pietro DiGiorgio

Presented by the Wordsmith Guild and the DCA, The Parlor Series features performances by musicians and spoken-word artists reading either poetry or prose. Light refreshments will be served. FREE

*September 11 -  Spoken Word:  Hosain Mosavat, Sufi Poet.                               Mr. Mosavat has mesmerized audiences with his thoughtful and insightful verse.  Music: John Willems is an attorney who has won numerous awards for his music and recordings.  He is currently serving as DCA Board President and is known for his love of and support of the arts.

*October 9 -   Spoken Word:  Storyteller, Mary Luevanos, a leader of the Mexican Community of greater Detroit, will perform a story highlighting “The Day of the Dead” celebration. Local poet, Rogelio Hernandez, will add to the theme with poetry.  Music:  Mune Lezuch, a singer and guitarist, will perform songs of her childhood from Mexico City.

*November 13 - Spoken Word: Cheri Taylor, founder of Blushing Blue Sky, a poetry workshop and performance organization, will perform excerpts from her recently released book, Wolf, Maiden, Moon. Joining her in the presentation will be Pietro  M. DiGiorgio.  Music:  Frank English, known as a visual artist, will highlight his performing skills in a program featuring a variety of musical styles.

*December 11 - Spoken Word: Pat Barnes, Pietro Di Giorgio and Sharlet Di Giorgio will set the holiday spirit with a poetic version of O. Henry’s classic, The Gift of the Magi.  Music:  TBA

FIBERS AND TEXTILES

NEW !Introduction to Textile Paint Techniques                         

Saturday, Sept. 13 12:30 – 3:30 PM

Instructor:  Marilyn Prucka

This hands-on workshop will introduce color mixing and various application techniques such as stamping, stenciling, direct application, monoprint and tied resist. Participants will make 12”x12” samples of each technique. A supply list of additional materials will be provided at the time of registration.  Wear old clothes!

NEW !"Hats Off to Felting!" Felted Cloche Hat                                    

Saturday, September 27th   12:30 – 4:00 PM                                                          

Instructor:  Anne Flora

Participants will make a cloche hat using Merino batt fiber and various types of embellishments. After wet felting hats, students will learn how to shape their cloches. Fee includes all materials for making the hat. Participants should bring the following supplies: sharp scissors, apron, paper towels, 4 household sponges, 2 old towels and a 1 quart plastic container.  Wear old clothes!

NEW !"Fits Me to a T" Collaged T-Shirt                                    

Saturday, October 4    12:30 – 3:30 PM                                                          

Instructor:  Cheryl Alt

Does your favorite T-Shirt have a small hole or a stain?  Don’t throw it away!  In this class you’ll learn several ways to alter and embellish a basic T-shirt and turn it into a designer original. Participants should bring a T-shirt to alter (new or used), a T-shirt board, scissors, pins, needle/thread, scraps of fabric, buttons,  odds & ends of sewing trims such as ribbon, lace & ric-rac and a ‘disappearing’ fabric marker.

Saturday, Nov. 8  12:30 – 3:30 PM

Instructor:  Andrea Irwin

Workshop participants will learn the art of needle felting to embellish a ready-made black felt shoulder bag purse.  All  materials will be provided.  Please bring a pair of scissors

NEW !"What a Doll!" Wild and Wacky Art Dolls                     

Saturday, November  22 12:30 – 3:30 PM

Instructor:  Vickie Boteler

Participants will make a non-traditional doll from a wide array of materials.  Learn to "step out of the box" and explore what is hidden inside. Most supplies will be included, but you will need to bring some creative ideas with you, and if you can't find any, those will be supplied as well!  Students should bring scissors, a needle & thread.

NEW ! “Alter-ed Egos”  - Altered Photo Techniques

Saturday, September 20, 12:30 – 3:30 PM

Instructor:  Cheryl Alt

Bring your over-exposed, under-exposed, badly cropped, out of focus  photos  and learn a variety of techniques to turn them into unique works of art. Altered photographs can then be used to make cards, decorative items or to embellish other artwork.   Participants should bring several unwanted photos, scissors, fine-grit sandpaper, inexpensive water-based markers, and a fine line black Sharpie.

NEW !“Wired & Bound” - Wire Edged Binding Book

Saturday, October 11     12:30 – 3:30 PM 

Instructor:  Marion Melody

Participants will make a small book using a wire edged binding method developed by book artist Daniel Kelm. This book binding method uses a thin metal wire along the spine edge of each page, making a book that opens exceptionally well and allows for a lot of creative expression.  A list of supplies will be provided at the time of registration.

NEW ! “The Circle of Life” -  Mandalas

Friday, October 24, 10:30 - N  Friday, October 31,  9 AM – N  

Instructor:  Babsi Riegler

In the first of this two part class, participants will learn the history of and types of Mandalas as well as the process of designing their own Mandala.  In the second part, students will construct a Mandala using materials of their choice. A supply list will be provided at the first class session.

NEW ! “The Sky’s the Limit!” Artist Trading Cards (ATCs)         

Sat., Oct. 18, 12:30 – 3:30 PM  

Instructor:  Irene Will

As the class title implies, we will use any and all art mediums to create an original piece of art in a 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch format.  Participants should bring:  scissors, permanent glue stick, a variety of papers, ephemera, ribbon, small flat ‘embellishments’, paints, brushes, markers,  rubber stamps, exacto knife, cutting mat,  etc…

 Back By Popular Demand!“Bits & Pieces” -  Fun with Collage             

Saturday, October 25, 12:30 – 3:30 PM  

Instructor:  Janus Benda

Transform a variety of paper (tissue, rice, & other decorative papers) into a work of art.  Along with paper, participants should bring a canvas board or other rigid support, Elmer’s glue or matte medium, cheap brushes and sponges.  Final works will be embellished with inks, colored pencils and paint.

NEW !“Offrendas”  Mini -Shrine                                                            

Sat, Nov. 1,  12:30 – 3:30 PM  

Instructor:  Cheryl Alt

Celebrate “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead)  by creating a mini shrine in an Altoid tin.  Participants should bring an Altoid tin,  fine grit sandpaper, gel medium & brush, scissors,  a variety of decorative paper (scrapbook, giftwrap, origami, etc…), photos and other paper ‘ephemera’  such as maps, ticket stubs, postage stamps, etc… feathers, keys, charms, watch faces, broken jewelry can be glued or tucked inside the shrine.

 Back by Popular Demand! Peyote Beading Technique                                 

Tuesday, October 14, 6:00 – 8:00 PM 

Instructor:  Babsi Riegler

This class focuses on learning the basic peyote stitch.  Participants will begin a peyote stitch bracelet in class.  Bring a beading surface, task light, scissors, pen and notepad.

FEE:  Members - $20  Non-Members - $25

Plus $20 material fee to instructor on day of class (kit includes enough beads to make a nice bracelet)  

NEW !Beginning Polymer Clay Bead Making                                  

Saturday, November 15, 12:30 – 3:30 PM

Instructor: Laura Flowers

Learn the basics of working with Polymer Clay by creating a variety of simple bead shapes while experimenting with decorative techniques and finishing methods.  When finished, participants will have several beads to take home as well as any leftover supplies from their kits.

Plus $15 Materials Fee to instructor on day of class (includes clay, acrylic roller and  decorative kit.)  

NEW !Spiral Rope Bracelet                                                                            

Sat., Dec. 6, 12:30 -3:30 PM  

Instructor:  Karen Danz

Spiral rope is a great beginner stitch for beaders new to needle and thread designs.  Loops of seed beads, Swarovski crystals, and pearls are stitched around a core of beads creating a spiral effect.  The finished bracelet drapes beautifully around the wrist and is an elegant addition to your jewelry collection.  Perfect for gifts too!  Students should bring a beading surface and scissors.  A list of additional supplies will be provided at the time of registration.
