Youth Summer Art Workshops - 2023

July 25, 26, 27

DRAWING: 10am–12pm

Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing using various mediums like pencils, blenders, erasers, chalk, pastels, charcoal and more to gain knowledge in realistic and abstract drawing of subjects such as animals, people, faces and objects.

ANIME: 12:30pm–2:30pm

Designed for fans of anime, manga, comics and cartoons. The anime art form, having originated in Japan in the early 1900s, is a uniquely stylized form of two- and three-dimensional illustration and animation. Teacher will lead lessons with step-by-step instruction. Students will learn essential drawing techniques as well as outlining and coloring to create completed works of art.


August 1, 2, 3

PAINTING: 10am–12pm

Students will learn the fundamentals of painting, while using a variety of paint to create abstract explorative and realistic paintings. They will experience basic techniques and utilize different types of paint. Students will have lessons on mixing, shading, lighting and more using various paint mediums.

Cost: $75 per student per session

Projects will be different in each session. No need to bring supplies, we’ll provide all the materials. Art classes can get messy, so please dress for it! Children can bring snacks. Children must be accompanied by an adult if they are staying in the building between sessions.

Registration online only. We will not be taking registrations in person or over the phone. Deadline to register is two days before start of session.


Fine print:

Adults are welcome to stay at the arts center during class time, but we request that you not participate in the class. Please be mindful that (especially during covid restricted times) we have a limited number of bodies allowed in a space. Also, our instructors are there to teach the children, and adults may be distracting to the group. Feel free to roam the building, visit our main floor gallery, lounge in the hallway, explore the auditorium or create art. Wifi is available as well as spaces for you to work.

It is the guardian’s/student’s responsibility to stay home if you are sick. If you have a fever, stay home. If someone in your house is sick, stay home. If you have allergies and can’t control sneezing, and cough please stay home. If you have been exposed or if you show signs of Covid-19, please stay home. If you miss a class, we will work with you on getting the instructions home to students, or possibly have an online option. If class is cancelled by the DCA or Executive Orders, we will refund your remaining classes.

Hand sanitizer is available for immediate use at the front entrance and entrance into each of our common areas. Parents please drop off and pick up your children outside when possible. Please wash hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after touching metal surfaces, sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose or using the restroom. In the case of being diagnosed with Covid-19 or show symptoms, immediately notify the DCA by email at dc4arts@downriverarts.org.
