All Souls Cafe. Ever wonder what Purgatory looks like? This painting gives one interpretation of where souls go. If it is a rest stop before someplace else, it may as well be a cafe. One lost soul in the river is being helped out by the Goddess Styx. Another interpretation could be that it is the Gatekeeper to Heaven holding a book of names. Or maybe it is just a Maitre d'.

The works seen here are pictures of the Cahalan Family, which lived on the corner of 4th and Orange St., in what is now the Palottine Fathers' Rectory. This my mother's family, and an interest in genealogy, as well as the influence of the wonderful Ann Arbor-based book artist Barbara Brown, led me to experiment in three dimensions with old family photos. The trick here is to re-see the most formally staged type of portraiture: the Edwardian-era family photograph! Further information is available at: www.gloselle.com
