As part of the Downriver Council for the Arts July exhibition titled “Re-Do,” resident artist, Tim Porter, worked with children to create an Augmented Reality Experience. The children, who are a part of the wide-ranging community arts projects and classes at the DCA, were asked to come up with their own characters for the project using graphite and/or acrylic paint to visually convey their concepts.
Porter then took their original characters and created digital sculptures using Zbrush, an all-in-one-digital sculpting application. Pixologic ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D modeling, texturing and painting. An augmented reality authoring and publishing tool was then used to place the models into the real space of the DCA gallery. For the full experience, exhibition attendees can view the digital images, in the round, using a smartphone or tablet.
"The imagination of the kids is what has really made the art collaboration a success. The whimsical characters they each created were a natural fit to the process," Porter reflected. As a full 360 AR experience attendees to the exhibit can walk around the digital installations as if they were really in the gallery space. The presentation will consist of the original artwork, done by the students, paper boxes showing all six sides of the sculptures along with the completed 3D/AR experience.
The Re-Do closing event will also feature work from 27 artists including paintings by DCA resident artist, Andy Morsello, as well as collaborative sculpture by 2010 Kresge Artist Fellow and performance artist, Frank Pahl and artist Tim Holmes. Performance/Demonstration of Pahl/Holmes’s piece, entitled "The Johnson," will occur sporadically throughout the evening's event.
As part of our ongoing community outreach we will have a table dedicated to people who want to create their own Re-Do. DCA instructor and artist, Elroy Grandy, will be working on clay projects with the public. If you like making art be sure to stop by.
Book Signing with children’s book author, Anita Greene. Megger the Egger is a “tall tail” about Meg, the cat, and her journey to “okayness”. She finds out it is very okay to have feelings and doubly okay to be just who she is. With the help of Sheriff Charlie, her Dad, and Gutzi, the Super Cat, she finds out how to deal with her anger, discovers her talents, and makes some wonderful new friends. Come along on her journey, especially if you like softball! Anita lives in a suburb near Detroit with her two fantastic daughters, 2 dogs, and 5 cats! She has been an entertainer, singing teacher, school social worker, and realtor. She loves reading and writing books. This is her fourth children’s book.
The projects can be seen in its entirety during the closing reception held June 17, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Downriver Council for the Arts located at 81 Chestnut, Wyandotte, MI. This event is free and open to the public.
